Best Tagging and Keyword Practices

Best Tagging and Keyword Practices

So today we are going to talk a little about tags and keywords. I'm just going to go over some of Zazzle's suggestions and rules quickly then direct you to where you can get more detailed info.

Let's start with your title.

When you make a title for a product you will want to:

1. Think of what phrase or words you would use to search for a product like yours. Make the title based on that. Fill it with keywords that you think the customer will use to find your product.

2. Zazzle asks that each title be unique. Don't use the same exact title for more than one product or use one someone else has used. It's hard, I am guilty of it myself. It's so easy to transfer a design to another product and just keep the same title. It can be hard to think of different ways to describe one item in twenty different ways, but try your best. I need to improve at this too. Zazzle says Google wants unique content, and one way to keep it unique is by titling each product a bit different.

3. Some good key words to use in a title are your product's color,  theme, design elements and who the item is intended for. For example you could put, "Pretty Yellow Floral Grandma's Birthday (Zazzle will add card). Zazzle will always put the product automatically at the end so you don't have to do that, otherwise it will just be doubled and look weird.

4. I will put a link below in the description to Zazzle's best practices for titles, description and tagging. Their page will be more detailed. I am just telling you the basics. Also if you are a professional computer person and know even more tips, please post them below for us.

Description

Just like with your title, you need to have a unique description. Each product description should be different. Again, Google likes original content and if something is repeated too much it gets recognized as spam. So make sure to change up that description.

Use a lot of key words that you think the customer will use to find your product. Is it a birthday card for grandma? Let them know. Let them know why your product is special and different from all the other products in the same category. For example, "Pretty birthday card for the grandma who loves yellow daisies", use specific keywords as well as general phrases. Let them know the intentions of how you can customize your product. Zazzle has a heavy  market for personalization, so make sure to make products that can be personalized.

Don't just use a couple words to describe your product, make sure to use at least 3 to 5 sentences. Make sure to use some keywords that you used in your title but don't repeat them too many times. Again, don't want to be considered spam.

Tags

Just like with the title and description, you will want to ask yourself, what words or phrase will someone search to find your product. Think of a general phrase such as "grandmas birthday" or a single word like "flowers". You can put up to ten tags so mix up the small phrases and single word tags. Each tag will has a  minimum of three characters, and phrases can have a maximum of five words.

Make sure the tags are relevant to your item. And specific to you item. For example, Zazzle suggests that you don't "Keyword stuff" such as putting "good for birthday, wedding or baby shower". I know that's hard when some products, especially customizable products, can be used for several occasion, but for reasons of Google's algorithm, that would be considered spam if you do too much of that. You can read Zazzle's article about tag spamming here.

Make sure to use different unique keywords. Of course you will have to repeat some keywords, but within tags make them differnet. For example, you can put yellow flowers, grandmas birthday, antique vase, celebration, but don't put grandmas birthday, grandmas favorite flowers, grandmas turning 60.... mix it up a bit in your tags.

Some tags that Zazzle suggest we don't use, and I know this one is hard, is the words: personalized, customized, gift ideas, make your own. There is more on the list on their page that I linked below. It seems that the reason why, is because that can pretty much describe every single product on Zazzle. Zazzle and Google wants unique content and for your product to stand out you must have differnet keywords and tags. Read more about what to do and what not to do at Zazzle's Best Tagging Practices Here.

Zazzle also asks that you don't use the product type in the tags. I am not sure why on this but they suggest not doing it. It is in the title anyways so people will know and algorithm will find your item that way.

They also suggest you don't put both singular and plural tags. Such as flower and flowers. Just pick which one is relevant to your product.
